WWW performance over GPRS

چکیده
In this paper, we present investigative results of HTTP performance over GPRS (General Packet Radio Service). Following on from an earlier study of GPRS[2], in which we uncovered a number of performance problems with TCP (e.g. sub-optimal start-up performance, excess queueing, spurious timeouts etc.), we discuss how and to what extent these limitations can impact HTTP. We also examine some other issues specifically linked to HTTP performance over GPRS. Our experimental results show that aggressive behaviour on the part of web browsers optimized for the wired-Internet does not work well over GPRS. Instead, limiting the number of browser TCP connections, which enables aggressive pipelining of requests, can give significant performance benefits. We show that using a proxy located close to the wired-wireless boundary that implements performance enhancements at both the transport (TCP) and application layer can lead to substantial reduction in web page download times over GPRS.

Service Disciplines Perfqrmance for Www Traffic in Gprs System
We investigate, in this paper, the performance of service disciplines in General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) system. The GPRS system is a new additional GSM service, which provide packet switched data services over GSM network and a packet access to data networks. Using either best effort service or guaranteed performance service, the service discipline affects considerably the MAC layer perfor...
متن کاملAnalytical performance evaluation of Internet access over GPRS and its comparison with simulation results
In this paper, we discuss the results of recently published analytical concepts for performance evaluation of packetswitched mobile radio networks. For comparison we regard the results of a simulation system (GPRSim), which emulates the GSM General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) in great detail. Our scope is to identify the possible reasons for deviations between analytical and simulation results ...
متن کاملGprs/edge Services Performance Measurements in the State of Kuwait
GPRS and EDGE are narrowband wireless data services that are deployed by GSM operators to provide higher data rate. This paper provides a set of measurements that are used to evaluate, from user perspective, GPRS and EDGE services in the State of Kuwait. The Measurements are taken in the Alsalam suburb which has no PSTN network. Measurements show that the GPRS performance is worst than the anal...
متن کاملPerformance evaluation of WAP-based applications over GPRS
The Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) as one application of mobile data services is examined with the aim to provide guidelines for the dimensioning of next generation mobile radio networks. The performance of WAP-based applications over GPRS is evaluated in scenarios where the GPRS radio resources are shared with conventional Internet applications like WWW and e-mail. Simulation results for ...
متن کاملA Performance Evaluation of Internet Access via the General Packet Radio Service of GSM
The General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) is currently being standardized by the European Telecommunications Standard Institute (ETSI) to extend the services provided by the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM). GPRS is dedicated to support packet-oriented traffic, e.g. Internet traffic. Packet oriented transmission is by nature better suited to convey bursty traffic, as it is generated ...
